FLAC Research Team Projects
As mentioned, the GRN was founded by the Future Liberal Arts Colleges (FLAC) Research Team of IERS, ICU. The FLAC Research Team has been carrying out a 3-year study (AY2014 – 2016) co-funded by the Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools in Japan and International Christian University. The purpose of this 3-year study is to design and suggest future private higher education systems in Japan with a special focus on improving international competitiveness and sustainability of small liberal arts colleges.

In 2014, the FLAC Research Team hosted an international forum to explore “Internationally Competitive Liberal Arts Education Models” ; conducted a faculty survey to identify perceptions, current status and future needs of liberal arts colleges and programs in Japan, and made visits to liberal arts institutions in Asia and N. America.

In 2016,
- One workshop to the theme of "Doing Liberal Arts and Sciences education: Promises and Possibilities" was organized to discuss the quality of liberal arts and sciences education in terms of curriculum, teaching and learning, research and policy which include: (i) competency-based curriculum development, (ii) integrating arts arts and sciences education, (iii) diversity and inclusion policies and practices, and (iv) evidence-based policy making, which further discussed for the promotion of collaborative research and educational networking among liberal arts institutions across different regions.
- One pilot program was developed and evaluated as follows:A team of faculty members from ICU, Japan and Chung-Ang University, South Korea developed a number of lessons together for their Japanese and Korean Language Education courses, implemented and evaluated the impacts on intercultural learning experiences. A synchronous video conferencing system and SNS were used for the pilot program. The result will be published as a book chapter.
